Flat figure 8 leads have been one of our most popular training tools for many years! Made especially for us, they are often more easily accepted by dogs as they do not interfere with their sight as much as round leads can.

Description

Figure Flat Figure 8 Leads

Flat figure 8 dog leads are a variation on the standard, round figure 8 leads. Our flat leads are made especially for us in a soft and padded webbing material. Complete with stainless steel fittings and tough, plastic tri slides for optimum fit. Flat figure 8 leads are often accepted more easily by dogs as the flat material is less likely to interfere with their sight line.

Why use a Figure 8 Dog Lead?

Dogs are born with little or no self-control. As a result, they can pull on the lead when they get excited for any reason. Often, they do not respond to our efforts to control them. This pulling on a regular lead and collar can initially lead to coughing and choking for the dog.

More seriously though, if the pulling is severe it can lead to long term damage to the throat and neck area. Not to mention the pain and discomfort for the owner! Indeed, we have had many customers over the years that have been pulled over and injured by their dog pulling on the lead. And herein lies the beauty of the flat figure 8 lead. Gentle on the dog and gentle on the owner!

Use the right tool for the job to stop pulling on the lead

Different dogs respond to different training methods. There is no one method that works for every dog. Furthermore, despite what some product packaging may say, there is no one training tool that stops pulling immediately. Here are some examples of different training techniques and tools to stop a dog pulling on the lead. This list is by no means exhaustive:

  • treat distraction
  • toy distraction
  • drop and turn method
  • stop walking when the dog pulls method
  • training head collar
  • training/front control harness

Dog training is a journey not a destination

Please note the use of the word ‘tool’. Our flat figure leads are just that, a tool. Their function is not to instantly stop pulling (though as with any tool, this is always a possibility). The role of this training lead is to give you more control over your dog. Training is a gradual process.

With the extra control from the Figure 8 lead, your dog has the opportunity and incentive to be in the correct at-heel position more often. Therefore, you can then reward this good behaviour with treats and so the dog begins to learn.

Conversely, should the dog pull on this lead, the design of the Figure 8 lead will exert gentle downward pressure on the bridge of their snout. This motion reduces the power the dog can exert through the lead. Furthermore, once the dog stops pulling, the pressure is released.

As a result, over time the dog can learn not to pull. But remember, a tool is only as good as the person using it. So be mindful of your training methods and own behaviour whilst walking your dog to get the best results.
