What is Hydrolysed Protein Dog Food?

Hydrolysed Dry Dog Food

Hydrolysed dry dog food is one that has had the protein part of the ingredients chemically ‘broken-down’. Hydrolysis is the action of breaking these larger protein molecules into smaller components.

Amino-acids bind together to create a protein molecule. Consequently, hydrolysis breaks these amino-acids down into smaller particles. Furthermore, the word Hydrolysed refers to the end-result of that process.

The protein in Teepee Hydrolysed dry dog food is broken-down into di-peptides and tri-peptides by hydrolysis. To achieve this, a natural enzyme is added to the meat during cooking.

The hydrolysed protein is then combined with the remaining ingredients. Teepee Hydrolysed dry dog food is the result.

How does Hydrolysed dry dog food help?

A simple analogy to highlight the benefits of hydrolysing protein is to imagine that your dog has a sieve, part-way down their digestive tract. This sieve is there to catch pieces of food that do not get properly digested (broken-down). Digestion is important, as good digestion allows for proper nutrient absorption further down the digestive tract.

If a dog has an intolerance or allergy to certain ingredients, feeding a hydrolysed-protein food can overcome this. Protein is the most common ingredient to cause a negative reaction. This is because protein is the hardest ingredient for the body to break-down.

When an ingredient is not properly broken-down, digestive upset (an intolerance) can occur. Or an immune system response (an allergy). These undigested or partially digested ingredients hit that metaphorical sieve in the digestive tract and cause a ‘blockage’. That blockage could show as digestive upset or an allergic reaction.

However, hydrolysing the protein allows the dog’s body to absorb these nutrients as they are small enough to pass through the sieve. Furthermore, the body does not recognise any specific protein as it has already been broken-down. Therefore, it does not react to it’s presence.

Grain Free

Over the years it has become apparent that more and more dogs are having issues with digesting grains. Rice, maize, barley, oats and wheat area all examples of common grains used in dog food.

In an effort to further improve the quality and digestibility of Teepee Hydrolysed dog food, it is totally Grain Free. The result is a complete, balanced and nutritious, Vet-recommended food. Eliminating the two most common causes of canine food-related health issues (protein and grain reactions), places Teepee firmly on the top rung of all hydrolysed dog foods available in the UK.

More often than not, when customer’s come into the shop asking about hydrolysed dry dog food, it is because their Vet has recommended it. Traditionally, Vets suggest feeding one of 4 hydrolysed foods currently available in the UK:

  • Royal Canin Hypoallergenic
  • Hill’s Z/D
  • Purina HA
  • Virbac Hypoallergy A2

Teepee Hydrolysed dry dog food is a new addition to this list. It is a readily available, off-the-shelf alternative to these foods.

With superior, more modern methods of production and ingredients, Teepee is not only good for your dog’s digestion but great for their taste buds too! The Freshtrusion process gently steam cooks the protein at 82c.
