Our Small Breed Salmon and Sweet Potato dog food can be very effective in managing allergies, itching and skin problems in dogs in small dogs. Not to mention upset tummies and poor digestion. Salmon (and trout) is naturally rich in Omega 3 essential fatty acids and these Omega oils have anti-inflammatory properties. Therefore they can be very beneficial for addressing skin and coat problems.

Small Breeds need a balanced diet too

Similarly, Asparagus is rich in vitamins A, C and K as well as folic acid. These all contribute to general health & well-being. Likewise, added prebiotics (MOS & FOS) can aid digestion by helping to promote the growth of ‘good’ digestive bacteria.

But What is a Small Breed dog?

A small breed dog is one that has an adult (fully grown) weight of 15kg or less. As a result of their smaller size, Small Breed dogs tend to have a higher metabolic rate than larger breeds. This is linked to a greater ratio of body surface area to body weight. Consequently, they have much higher energy requirements per kilogram of body weight, and therefore they need a nutrient dense food with a higher calorie content.

Furthermore, their activity levels are often higher than larger dogs. Even just walking by our side can burn a lot of energy for a small breed. They have to walk much quicker to keep up with us then a larger dog would need to due to their shorter legs. All this extra activity combined with a higher metabolic rate burns more calories on a day-to-day basis. Consequently, we have increased the levels of protein and fat in our Small Breed dog food to service these higher energy requirements.

How much should you feed?

All bags of Teepee Small Breed Salmon dog food come with suggested feeding quantities. However, these are purely a guide. Getting the portion size right for your dog is a key part of combating itching, skin or digestive problems in dogs. The following factors can have an affect on feeding quantities*:

• neutering. Neutered dogs should have their portions reduced by about 10%.
• individual breed.
• metabolic rate.
• level of activity.
• age of the dog.
• sex of the dog.
• ambient living temperature etc.

As a result, adjust feeding quantities as necessary. No matter how good a food is, too much is no good! For example, over feeding will usually lead to poor digestion, soft poo and even itching, coat or skin problems. Not to mention weight gain. Similarly, too little will affect their ability to maintain a healthy bodyweight.
